It was a pleasure to be at ASE to present our work on the 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦.Among the many interesting discussions about how AI is reshaping Software Engineering (SE), one recurring idea stood out: as generating code becomes easier and faster, the 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 becomes even more important.This resonates with a question that has been central to my own research on quantum software. As systems become more complex, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥, 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘳?Perhaps there is a useful lesson to draw from the current challenges of AI-assisted software development. 𝑽𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒂 𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅. Testability needs to be considered from the outset, as part of how we design and build software.Quantum software brings its own challenges, and the field is still evolving. This makes it an interesting time to think about validation before complexity makes it even harder.
